HOW a modest Colombian telenovela about a pitifully ugly woman trying to navigate the shallow waters of the fashion industry became one of the world’s most popular television shows is a Cinderella story of its own, one more unlikely than even the most optimistic screenwriter could imagine.
That show, “Yo Soy Betty La Fea” (“I Am Betty the Ugly”), could have been another one of the telenovelas — the nightly soap operas featuring a breathless blend of camp, melodrama and cliffhanger — that dominate primetime programming in Colombia. But its creator, Fernando Gaitán, had greater ambitions. So Mr. Gaitán created Beatriz Pinzón Solano, a woman with brains (Betty holds a master’s degree in economics), a heart (she is caretaker to her aging father) and a face so unfortunately contoured that it comes as a relief to find her forehead hidden under a fringe of oily black bangs.
By the end of its two-year run — 340 half-hour episodes, all written by Mr. Gaitán — “Yo Soy Betty La Fea” was Colombia’s most popular telenovela, pulling in three million viewers a night. Betty’s every move became a national obsession. With Colombia in the midst of a huge political bribery scandal, Betty briefly considered accepting money from a fabric company desperate to get into business with her boss.
It wasn’t long until Mr. Silverman of Hollywood took notice. After an unsuccessful attempt to make the show as a half-hour comedy at NBC, Mr. Silverman brought the actress Salma Hayek — who began her career as a star of Mexican telenovelas — on as a producer. They tried to find the most effective way to turn a half-hour nightly soap opera into an hour-long serial comedy-drama, and eventually they found a home for it at ABC.
“We toned down a bit of the drama,” Ms. Hayek said on the telephone. “What we didn’t want to lose was the feeling that at the end of every episode, you can’t wait to see what happens next.”
After working with two other writers, the pair discovered Silvio Horta, a young, first-generation Cuban-American writer. He was best known for two well-received science fiction shows (“Jake 2.0” and “The Chronicle”) but was itching to get into more character-based television. And it helped that he had telenovelas in his blood.
“We had one television growing up, and my mom would be watching the telenovelas every night. We had no choice. All my friends, first-generation immigrants, would make fun of them, and then become completely addicted,” said Mr. Horta, echoing the frustration of an entire generation of Latin men.
For his version Mr. Horta has held close to show’s template, with some local adaptations. Betty is a bit less ugly; Americans are apparently not ready for a unibrow in prime time. She’s also younger (played by America Ferera), works not as an assistant at a fashion house but at a fashion magazine in a Condé Nast-esque publishing empire and commutes each day to Manhattan from Queens. She’s also first-generation Mexican — Mr. Silverman and Ms. Hayek fought to keep her Latina — and, like the original Betty, has a singularly horrific fashion sense.
How will Betty play in America? Remakes of foreign shows are tricky: for every “All in the Family” (“Till Death Do Us Part” in Britain) and “The Office,” there is a “Coupling” or “The Kumars at No. 42,” a worldwide phenomenon whose American version was canceled before it was ever broadcast. “Ugly Betty” certainly faces an uphill battle — a difficult Friday-night time slot and a character who looks like she’s never heard of Bikram Yoga or macrobiotic salad dressing — yet it would be foolish to count it out. Betty has vanquished Colombian corruption and given Germany and Russia something they can agree on. Surely she won’t back down from NBC’s Friday night competition: the impossibly attractive crimefighters of “Crossing Jordan.”

HINDI naman siguro magagalit ang GMA-7 at si Direk Mark Reyes kung isusulat namin ang ilan sa cast ng Atlantika at info about the show dahil nasa Internet na ito. Ini-report na rin ito sa ilang show ng GMA-7 pati sa 24 Oras.
Makakasama nina Iza Calzado at Dingdong Dantes sina Rudy Fernandez, Jean Garcia, Ariel Rivera, Katrina Halili, Bianca King, Mark Gil, Pen Medina, Valerie Concepcion, Paolo Contis, Isabel Oli, Chynna Ortaleza, Gardo Versoza, Gene Padilla, Artgur Solinap, Jojo Alejar, Elvis Gutierrez at Cherry Pie Picache.
Tiyak na madaragdagan pa sila habang tumatakbo ang serye.
Dapat last Saturday ang first taping day, pero ’di natuloy at na-reset last Monday. Baka ’di rin natuloy dahil sa bagyo.

Miss Universe 2006
Our very own Miss Lia Andrea Ramos didnt get the crown for Ms. Universe but she did get the tittle for Ms. Photogenic. I think this is the second time in a row Philippines got the tittle. I was very dis-appointed, because I was really rooting for this one.But atleast she got Ms. Photogenic. Although, another Asian country made it to top 5, and its no other than Ms. Japan herself, Kurara Chibana, but unfortunately she only got to 1st runner up. 2nd is Ms. Switzerland, Lauriane Gillieron, 3rd, Lourdes Arevalos of Paraguay and last but not the least Miss USA, Tara Conner. And the contestant who got the tittle is non-other than, (drum role).....Zuleyka Rivera of Puerto Rico..

Jason Hsu, to appear as 'contra bida' on CB
Taiwanese superstar Jason Hsu (of My MVP Valentine and Twin Sister fame) will have his first telefantasya guesting in GMA! Jason will portray a robot in Captain Barbell. “I’m very excited,” he says. Naikwento ni Jason na ang unang hahanapin niya pagdating sa hotel ay ang kaniyang favorite Filipino food – lechon at dried mangoes. Despite his busy schedule, he still went out of his way to spend time with his fans in an intimate “Meet and Greet” inside the GMA compound. Nagkataon na nandoon din si Jolina Magdangal para i-welcome si Jason. Like most guys, Jason was swept away when he saw Angel Locsin’s poster, and he says that he wants to return to the country in the future to have a team up with Angel. “She’s really hot!” Jason says.Excited si Jason nang isukat niya ang robot outfit niya para sa Captain Barbell, at sigurado raw na magugustuhan ng kaniyang mga fans ang kaniyang kauna-unahang pagganap sa isang fantasy role.

Dumating ng bansa ang Taiwanese singer/actor para gumanap na kontrabida kay Richard Gutierrez sa Captain Barbell.
Okey lang sa kanya ang role na kontrabida. Ayon sa kanya ay walang problema ‘yon. Maganda raw kasi ang role na ‘yon.
Bale cyborg siya sa Captain Barbell at may control sa kanya ang kontrabidang si Richard Gomez.
Tinanong din namin si Jason kung okey lang ba sa mga kasama niya sa 5566 na siya lang ang kinuha ng GMA 7 para sa Captain Barbell.

Hindi Si Sheryl Ang Bida, Kundi Si Sunshine
Si Sunshine Dizon ang bida sa Bakekang. Ipinatawag na ng management ang aktres last week at personal na sinabi sa kanya ang bagong project. Sa labis na tuwa, umiyak ito’t hindi inaasahang pagkakatiwalaan ng malaking proyekto ng istasyon. Nag-text kami sa actress for confirmation, pero ‘di kami sinagot at first time itong ’di sumagot. Kundi last week ng July, first week ng August ang scheduled taping ng Bakekang, kaya baka mapadali ang pagkawala ni Sunshine sa Captain Barbell. Sina Gil Tejada at Khryss Adalia ang magtutulong sa pagdidirek nito at kundi mababago ang line-up, si Wendell Ramos ang makakapareha ni
Sunshine. Ang tsika sa amin, kasama si Sheryl Cruz, pero ‘di pa alam ang role. Nabanggit din sina Nadine Samonte at Yasmien Kurdi sa cast, pero wala raw sa dalawa ang gaganap na anak ni Bakekang dahil ibang young star ang napipisil sa nasabing papel, na kukumpirmahin muna namin bago isulat. Hindi na rin daw kasama si Pauleen Luna dahil may iba itong project. Tatanggalin na ba si Pia Guanio as one of the hosts ng Eat Bulaga? Kaya namin naitanong ay dahil ipinasok na raw si Cindy Kurleto at may ugong na kapalit siya ni Pia. Nagulat kami sa isyung ito dahil wala naman kaming nakikitang dahilan para tanggalin si Pia, baka idinagdag lang si Cindy sa naturang programa dahil may request since maganda ang team-up nila ni Vic Sotto sa Daddy Di Do Du. Pero ang say sa amin, "Baka hindi bibiglaing tsugihin si Pia, uunti-untiin kasi remember, lahat ng nali-link kay bossing Vic, tsinutsugi para hindi makasira sa image? EB BABE: Last Women Standing
Ngayong tanghali ang second elimination day ng EB Babes sa Eat Bu-laga.
Last Saturday ay isa na ang natanggal sa 22 semi-finalists. Tila inuunang tsugihin ‘yung mga ‘pasaway’ sa EB Babes Training Camp.
Nu’ng Hulyo 3 ay pumasok ang 22 girls sa nasabing training camp sa Sitio Lucia, Sta. Maria, Bulacan. Thirty days sila roon kung saan sasailalim sila sa matinding training under the supervision of their camp master na si Maribeth Bichara.
Ang suwerte ng EB Babes dahil pawang magagaling ang nagha-handle ng iba’t ibang training nila, tulad ni Jhong Hilario (ng Streetboys) para sa streetdancing.
Meron din silang jazz at ballroom dancing training, makeup lessons with Nina Ricci Alagao at kung anu-ano pa.
Nag-pictorial na rin sila at napili na kung sino ang pinaka-photogenic. Ang dinig namin ay tuturuan din sila ng taekwondo ni Monsour del Rosario at ng karate ni Ronnie Ricketts.
Live ang EB Babes semi-finalists sa Eat Bulaga studio tuwing Sabado at bawas na naman sila pagbalik nila ng training camp sa Lunes.
Umupa ang TAPE, Inc. ng isang resort sa Bulacan para sa nasabing contest ng Eat Bulaga. Mala-reality show ang drama nila roon at may daily updates sa mga awayan at kadramahan nila sa loob ng training camp.
Pagkatapos ng series of elimination, 12 na matitibay at mahuhusay na lang ang matitira sa training camp sa Agosto at paglabas ay magiging mapapalad na EB Babes ng Eat Bulaga!

Real Reason Why Bakekang Rights Goes To Kapuso
ALAM na namin agad kung bakit napunta sa GMA-7 ang Bakekang ni Carlo Caparas. Ang bilis ng pagkakarating ng balita sa amin about this na na-deadline pa lang namin ang kuwento kahapon.
‘Di nga ba’t originally sa GMA-7 daw napunta ang Bakekang story kahit wala pang usapan na nagaganap between the Kapuso network and Carlo? Then, during the Panday days sa ABS-CBN, biglang nag-resurface ang Bakekang, but in the Kapamilya network na.
Sa Fantastic 56 show, officially announced nang Kapuso ang gagawa ng Bakekang, so we asked what happened.
A source called us to explain why. It turned out Carlo is negotiating daw for a show he would like to write, produce and direct sa GMA-7. He reportedly got an alternative offer, sa QTV. Kapalit nga ni-tong deal ay ang pagbigay ni-ya ng rights sa Siyete to produce Bakekang story.
We got another item regarding the planned soap. While it was written that Di-rek Eric Quizon will do the di-recting job, may ibang name na sinabi ang aming source -- si Gil Tejada raw ang magdi-direk nito.
May isa pa kaming scoop kung sino ang gaganap na anak ni Sheryl Cruz, pero abangan n’yo na lang ‘yan sa column na ito tomorrow.

BAKIT kaya sa GMA-7 napunta ang Bakekang ni Carlo J Caparas?
Nai-announce ni GMA Network president Atty. Gozon during the Fantastic 56 show last Sunday na ang Bakekang at Atlantica will be the next in line na ipu-produce ng Kapuso bilang primetime soap.
Naalaala namin out of nowhere na bigla na lang sumambulat ang balitang gagawin nga ito ng Siyete even before the rights were given. Panahon ‘yun ng Kampanerang Kuba ng ABS -CBN and some Kapamilya PR brought this out na gaya-gaya raw ang GMA-7 na porke may Vilma Santos movie-turned-soap sila, dapat may Nora Aunor movie-turned -soap naman ang Kapuso.

Ang Pagbabago..a show that will change your life
Ngayong Lunes na ang simula ng Ang Pagbabago, ang bagong show hosted by Diana Zubiri and Alfred Vargas. Excited na ang dalawa’t bagong field ang kanilang pinasok at kung susuwertihin, baka tuluy-tuloy na ang pagiging host nila. Sabi’y ‘pag nag-klik ito’y baka ilipat ang show sa time slot ng Extra Challenge. Ibig bang sabihin, sina Diana at Alfred na ang bagong Paolo Bediones at Miriam Quiambao ng GMA-7? Samantala, sa Wednesday na ang showing ng I Wanna Be Happy na dalawa sa mga bida ay sina Diana at Alfred. Siguradong maninibago ang kanilang fans sa linis ng pelikula’t wala silang kissing scene at cleavage lang ang ipinakita ng actress. Nausisa pa rin si Alfred sa pagkikita nila ng mommy ni LJ Reyes sa New York. Nagbigay respeto raw siya at in-assure itong walang dapat ikabahala’t aalagaan niya ang dalaga. Maganda’t bata at puwede raw maging artista ang mommy ng dalaga. Ann Taylor bag ang pasalubong niya kay LJ kapalit ng jacket na ipinasalubong sa kanya nang manggaling ito ng New York noong May.

South Border ready for international
SOUTH Border, the country’s premiere R&B band, is back from a successful US tour and ready to launch an international music career.
The multi-awarded group performed in mainstream clubs on the East and West coasts, playing to stand up crowds at the Viper Room on Sunset Boulevard in Hollywood, the Armory in San Diego, South San Francisco Auditorium, The Gig at Melrose Avenue, Hollywood; the Rhythm Lounge at Downtown Long Beach and the Knitting Factory, Hollywood in the West Coast. In the East Coast, the group performed at the Roxy Club in New York, The Lisner Auditorium in Washington, D.C., Pickwick Theater at Park Ridge, Illinois and Maydenbauer Center in Bellevue, Washington.
The group, led by vocalist, keyboardist and musical director Jay Durias, is back for a series of performances in Manila in June and July but is set the launch the European leg of their concert tour in mid-July. They will perform at the Ulster Hall in Belfast, Ireland on July 15 and at the Lampton Park in Hounslow, London on July 16 for the 22nd Barrio Fiesta sa London.
South Border will be back in Manila in August, but only for a while. In September the band will fly to the land of Down Under and play to Oz crowds on Sept. 9. From Australia, the group goes straight to the US to fulfill commitments to become headliners for B.B. King, a chain of popular mainstream clubs in the US. B.B. King’s clubs are located all over the U.S. among them, Universal City Walk in California, New York; Nashville and Memphis, in Tennessee where the music legend, B.B. King himself, owns the club.

After long years being a Kapamilya, hindi na muli pumirma ng contrata si Robin Padilla sa ABS-CBN. Ngayon naman ay kasali na sya sa mga listaan ng mga Kapamilya na nag ober da bakod na. A workaholic architect, Michael Newman (Adam Sandler), who came across to a universal remote that allows him to fast-forward and rewind parts of his life. But all good things must come to an end, when everything becomes chaotic.
Click is just one of Adam Sandler's comedy movies. But the last 30 minutes are brilliant, heartwarming, heartbreaking, emotional film that touches your brain and heart and makes you realize how important family, life, and the consequences of the choices that we make. Also the last 30 minutes, Michael Newman (Adam Sandler) puts the audience in tears with the situation all of us fears to be in. But all of this wouldnt be as powerful if Sandler didnt put his great performance into it.

Regine-Robin re-unite on big screen

i know a lot is gonna be offended by this. and i also dont agree to all of these statements. i was just dis-appointed with the price of the tickets. c'mmon, 50,000 pesos?? who can afford that..even the lowest ticket was almost 8,000 pesos. our country is already suffering.
